Histories for USS Lipan - ATF 85




Our Cruises 1956 - 1959
1956--Crew is stabilized until 1 October which results in about 50% new personnel. Interim wash-down system is installed. 1956--Departs Pearl for Eniwetok with YON-182 in tow on 12 March. Arrives 29 March. Anchored until 13 April when Lipan departs for Bikini and remains there until 21 July when last shot is fired. Departs Bikini 21 July. 1956--Arrives Pearl Harbor 1 August. 1957--Lipan provides routine services until 25 March. Lipan enroute to Adak, Alaska. Arrives Adak 2 April. Sustains storm damage consisting of caved in stanchions, gun tubs, and loss of rubber lifeboat. Ship rolls 49 degrees during the storm. 1957--Lipan picks up injured seaman from SS Ocean Seaman Visits Attu and Atka during its three month tour of duty in Aleutians. Departs Adak for Pearl on 30 June, arriving in Pearl 7 July. 1957--From 14 September through 4 October, the Lipan assists in making the film "South Pacific" which was produced by 20th Century Fox. Reportedly, sailors are paid $15.00 a day to be extras. Chief Cobb rides his motorcycle onto the set at night, after filming had stopped, but he is quickly escorted out of the area. 1957--Lipan proceeds to Maro Reef to assist the Safeguard and Reclaimer in the salvage of the tanker, Mission San Miguel which ran aground. Mission failed. Lipan remains in Pearl remainder of the year. 1958--Lipan departs Pearl Harbor in the early part of 1958 and sails for Japan and the far east. Making only 2-3 knots, the trip takes one month. 1959--Lipan sails to Adak, Alaska in the spring, returns in May. Alaska and Hawaii obtains statehood that year.
